Projects and Progress

Hey  this is just a list of things I've worked on and links  to more information about specific efforts. This is where  I admit how much work some of this really was. The most recent stuff tends to be at the top, though that order  is not strictly enforced.

Brakes,  brakes and more brakes...

First  Look

Stu  and I took a photo of the Little Red Truck and parked it on a  clean background, added wheels and tires, and dropped it just a little...

I  think this gets the the ride height and attitude the way I'd like it to look. Not quite tucking rim, and just slightly lower in  the front that the back. Since we're putting relatively narrow ifs and rear axle under it which should mitigate some tire interference  issues.

My Dually Lives!

I've been saying for a while that I want a Dually truck. My friend Scott  offered me this 1978 Holiday Rambler motorhome. Its pretty sad as  motorhomes go, but underneath it is a Chevrolet P30 frame and running  gear with a Chevy 454 and a turbo 400.

This is perfect as a donor vehicle and the first move toward building a dually!

Van  Went Day

You  just have to love Spring Break and Vacation Time!

This may rank as one of my best vacations ever! One high point was  dropping the Van at Jim's Auto Wrecking. Its gone! Before it left we did get the engine and transmission out, dropped the fuel tank, and grabbed a few more small parts.

Results. VanGo Day!

First  Suspension Rehab! (March 2004)
We built a swap meet wagon. I welded up the new axles. Great fun, plus I  think it will be a very useful addition to the tool set! (more)

VanGo  Day (February 2004)
Invited  a bunch of friends over to part out the van. Lots of work, lots of dirt and grease, and need one more day to finish it up!

Dash Renewal (February 2004)
This project deserves several pages, but its not finished, and I'm not ready to tell it...
Gauges have been replaced, others have new faces, the panels have new paint.

Still  to be done is rebuilding indicator lights that will add turnsignal,  high beam and backup light to what was once just a high beam indicator. I'm using LEDs mounted in an aluminum plug my brother Paul sent me.  Its gonna be cool when its done!

Dome Light (February 2004)

This is a stock type dome light, with a side marker light socket and bulb replacing the original socket and bulb. The socket replacement  allows the standard switch to turn the light on and off, AND the dome light can also be operated by the not so stock door jam switches  I've added.

Under  the dash I've installed courtesy lights from a '70s Buick. Very nice, one screw and a little wire. Next is a glove box light acquired on eBay.

Backup Lights (January 2004)

It has really bothered me that I could not see behind me when backing in the dark, nor was it clear to others that I was backing, because  I did not have backup lights. Contrary to what one unhappy individual told me, the law does not require backup lights. Good sense does.

The  whole backup light story!

Big  Blue Truck Disassembly

Okay this is still wishful thinking. But I bought the Big Blue Truck  for parts, and someday we will take it apart... But I'm thinking of turning it into a DUALLY instead. What do you think?

More Pictures!

Ever wonder if we'll put any of this stuff together? So do my neighbors!

Little Red Truck Disassembly

Similar  to Monte Carlo Day, I invited a bunch of young guys over to help take the Little Red Truck apart. The  whole story and more photos.

Part One, Front and Bed

Part Two, Cab and Motor

The  Monte Carlo is gone!

Its gone. Monte Carlo day was a blast, and we will do similar things again, but now that project is over. Gateway towing came right over,  when they said they would.

The  driver looked at the Monte, sitting on blocks with no wheels or even axles and yelled (over the sound of the big diesel) that I  had to be kidding. I wasn't, and he took it. More pictures!

The  OldSub in daily driver mode.

I don't  remember why I was taking pictures this day, but since I was, and this is a pretty good representation of what it looks like, I thought  I'd put it here... Ignore the camera case on the hood...

Its  a long story, but you'd be interested.

This is the day Stu and I took the Little Red Truck down to Bremerton  to have the VIN inspected. The title (from Texas) has listed the engine number as vehicle ID, and since the motor is going away, I wanted to get the VIN from the body on the title before removing  that motor. Lots of fun.

 Monte Carlo Day...

Saturday,  March 29, 2003 was Monte Carlo Day. Now some are wondering what gambling might have to do with old trucks Others already know that back in November I acquired a 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo to donate  parts for Teri's little red truck.

I invited  a bunch of teenage boys over to help take the car apart. I promised  to provide pizza and soft drinks and hoped we'd have a good time.

It went great, and lots of pictures and maybe a little of the story,  are here...  Caution, its a big page...
